Railroad builder James J. Hill commissioned the bridge in 1883. Constructed from granite and limestone, it has 23 arches and carried railway traffic until 1978. Its later rehabilitation preserved a structure associated with the movement of people and goods during the city's railroad era.
The surrounding riverfront includes Mill Ruins Park and Mill City Museum, placing the bridge within a wider landscape of industrial history.
