Sioux Falls takes its name from the falls of the Big Sioux River, now central to Falls Park north of downtown. The river has been a focus of life in the area for generations, including Indigenous communities before the city's founding. The park brings that natural setting together with visible reminders of later industry.
On the east side of the river stand the remains of the Queen Bee Mill. Opened in 1881, its seven-storey structure was built from Sioux Quartzite quarried on the site. The project sought to process local wheat, but inadequate water power and a shortage of grain contributed to its early closure.
A surviving quartzite building nearby housed the Sioux Falls Light and Power Company from 1908. Its history links the falls with electricity generation as well as milling. These places explain the park's industrial heritage without asserting that a viewing platform, cafe or other facility will be accessible during New Year's Eve.
Choose a downtown restaurant around the evening's final reservation. A park visit is a separate stop, not a meal or ticketed NYE package.
